Making the Parrot Talk:  Revelation 2:5-6

A woman bought a parrot to keep her company. She returned to the pet store the next day with a

complaint: “This bird you sold me won’t talk.”  The pet store manager said, “Does he have a mirror in his cage? Parrots love mirrors. They see their reflection and they start up a conversation.” So she bought a mirror and went home.

A couple of days later she was back. The bird still wasn’t talking. “How about a ladder?” the manager asked. “A ladder will make your parrot happy, and a happy parrot is more likely to talk.” She bought the ladder and left.  Two days later she returned. The bird still hadn’t said anything. The store manager thought for a minute and said, “How about a swing? All parrots need a swing. A swing will loosen him up, and he’ll be talking in no time.” The woman reluctantly bought the swing and left.

She was back the next day, looking dejected. “My parrot died,” she said.   “That’s terrible,” the manager said. “Did he ever say a word?”   “Yes,” the woman said, “Right before he died he said, ‘Don’t they sell any food at that pet store?’”

TRYING ONE THING AND THEN ANOTHER.    Isn’t this just like us?

We try so hard to get the things we want in so many different ways, and we keep overlooking the simplest, most obvious solutions. I see it in people who seek with all their heart to be happy, going from one

distraction to the next — possessions and relationships most often — and yet their hunger is never

satisfied.

I also see it in churches working feverishly to catch the next fad, trying desperately to be “relevant”, yet continually overlooking their most basic objective: bringing people to Christ and teaching them to become disciples.

Let me ask you a question.  Are you starving? Is your house filled with things and your life filled with

activities and your ministry filled with programs — and are you still starving?

If so, maybe it’s time to Return.  The parrot died because his owner overlooked the most basic of all

basics – and many of our troubles can be traced to the same thing.

Jesus said to the church in Ephesus, “You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” (Revelation 2:5-6)

If you’re floundering, take a second look at the fundamentals. Maybe it’s time to revisit square one. You don’t just begin with the basics, you win with the basics. They are our strategy for “success” — it is the key to accomplishing God’s will with our lives and furthering his kingdom with our work.

New Years Resolutions:  I read this week the 10 most common New Years resolutions are.    1. Get in Shape  2. Eat Healthier  3. Get out of Debt  4. Stop Smoking  5. Start budgeting  6. Get a new job/ Start a Business  7. Spend more time with Family  8. Save or make more money  9. Get your life organized  10. Give More

Did you notice what was left off the list?  Getting more committed to Christ and more involved with your church.  Also left off the list was helping the lost by bringing them to Christ.  Isn’t that what we as

Christians are supposed to be doing?  Not simply saying “I’m working on it” or “Maybe later.

I don’t know what, if any, Resolutions you made this year, but I hope they included Christ and his Church.  Just something to think about.

Serving him and you,   Alan

Christmas Offering News:

The response to the Christmas offering was overwhelming. We will  begin to enjoy the benefit of the new speakers and the major components as they are scheduled to begin installing at the writing of this newsletter. The final piece is the mixing console and we are still in need of some of that financing. I am so appreciative of those that have given so far, it has been great to see the people of this church step up and give toward this need. The sound will already be an improvement. We are still short of getting the last piece of equipment and we need $1400.00 to complete the new system, we will continue to accept gift offerings.

The Praise Team will lead the worship the 1st Thursday of every month at World Harvest from 7pm – 9pm. Everyone is invited to come. Davis Park Praise Team leads from 7pm-8pm.

Anyone that would like to serve on the Praise Team or in the Sound Booth please see me

Austin's Adage

Hello everyone! February is going to be a busy month for our youth group, and I'd like to take a moment to share some of our events with you.

We will be traveling to Oklahoma City on Saturday, February 18 for the Winter Jam concert. This is such a great concert because it features ten Christian artists for only $10. In addition to the music, there will also be an illusionist and several guest speakers that will share a message from God's word. Please pray that God moves through the musicians and speakers and that our youth (and everyone else in attendance) will be challenged to live their lives fully for Christ.

The next weekend we will participate in the Thirty Hour Famine. This is a World Vision event designed to challenge and encourage students to take a stand against hunger in our world today. Nearly one billion people go to bed hungry every night. This is not acceptable. As a group, we will go without food for thirty full hours to raise awareness of famines and hunger. We will couple this fast with fellowship, education, and community service in order to make the maximum impact possible. Even though this is a youth group event, every member of our church is encouraged to participate by sponsoring a student while they fast. If you sponsor one student for one dollar per hour of the famine, that student will raise $30 for World Vision, which is enough to feed one child for an entire month! Please prayerfully consider giving freely of your monetary blessings in order to show Christ's love to a world in need!

Thank you for your continued prayers, support, and encouragement!

Austin Miles

FEBRUARY FAMILY NIGHT

I am excited to announce that our February family night is going to be a movie night.  We will be watching the movie Courageous!  It is THE BEST MOVIE that I have ever seen, and has a lot to offer both men and women.  I also think that it is a must see for teenagers to know what type of spouse they should want to look for and what they should strive to become!  I really think this movie will even capture the attention of most children.  It really is probably the best Christian movie ever made!  Bring your tissues, you will laugh one minute and cry the next.  The movie is free, and we will have popcorn, pickles, and candy for free.  Bring a friend and join us on Sunday night February 19th at 6:00.  You really do not want to miss this movie!

Looking forward to a great 2012!

Love,

Melissa
